Understanding Montana Vehicle Registration and Titling

Montana has unique rules for vehicle registration and titling. Whether buying from a dealership, a private seller, or moving to Montana with a vehicle from another state, here is what you need to know.

No Sales Tax

Montana is one of a handful of states with no general sales tax. That means no sales tax on vehicle purchases, which can save you thousands compared to most other states.

Registration Fees

Instead of sales tax, Montana charges registration fees based on vehicle age and value. In the first year, expect roughly 1% to 2% of MSRP, declining each year after.

Where to Register

Registration is handled at your county treasurer's office. In Fergus County (Lewistown), that is at the courthouse on Main Street. You need your title, proof of insurance, and odometer disclosure.

Buying from a Dealership

When you purchase from EZ Car Network, we handle the paperwork: title application, registration fees, and county submission. Plates arrive by mail.

Buying from a Private Seller

You have 30 days to register. You need the signed title, bill of sale, proof of insurance, and fee payment. Verify the title is lien-free before paying.

Moving to Montana

You have 60 days to register after establishing residency. Bring your out-of-state title, proof of Montana residency, and proof of insurance from a Montana-approved carrier.

Insurance Requirements

Montana requires minimum liability of $25,000/$50,000 bodily injury and $20,000 property damage. Most advisors recommend higher limits.
